Your immune system is waging a constant war against disease-causing microorganisms. But when it fails, viruses and illnesses can overrun your body, much like an invading army.
The good news is that there are steps you can take to boost your immune system.
The best way to ward off illness is to get adequate sleep, exercise and maintain a balanced diet, said Dr. Annabell Torres, a physician at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Deltona. Here are a few things you can do to boost your immune system.
Exposure to germs may build immunity
A study from Sweden published last week in the Journal of Pediatrics found that infants whose parents licked or sucked on their children’s pacifiers to clean them developed fewer allergies than children whose parents washed or boiled the pacifiers. The study challenges conventional wisdom about germs but points to a growing amount of evidence that some exposure to germs is important for building a healthy immune system, Torres said.
“Our defensive system is designed to prevent illness and we have the ability to fight infection,” Torres said. “We are in constant exposure of germs and bacteria and we have a memory bank in which we are able to fight off infections.”
