There are many tools that one can use to age healthily including the use of technology from computers, pads and even phones and smart devices. Becoming comfortable with these tools is the first step.

There are many research projects currently being conducted by the University of Melbourne focusing on a subject that is of concern to many of us – getting older, staying well and the worry that our memory tends to get worse as we age. Annie Rahilly investigates some strategies that will help her as she ages!

Australia, like many other countries around the world, has a looming aged care crisis. Over the next 45 years the number of Australians aged over 65 is expected to double. At the same time, we are confronting an epidemic of dementia and older people experiencing social isolation. A 2008 report by the State Government of Victoria showed there were currently over 50,000 socially isolated Victorians over the age of 65 years, and this number is expected to increase to 75,000 by 2020 — a growth rate of 46 per cent.

Researchers at the University of Melbourne are working on projects that aim to keep older people more connected and vital so they can continue to make a valuable contribution. They are also looking at how we can better diagnose conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) at very early stages.
